2026/27 Plan 5 threshold: £25,000 a year (£2,083.33 a month). The projection keeps the threshold fixed and applies your interest rate and pay rise each year, so it is an estimate only. Check your actual interest rate in your online loan account. Plan 5 loans are written off 40 years after the April you were first due to repay.
If you started an undergraduate course in England on or after 1 August 2023, your loan is on Plan 5. This student loan Plan 5 calculator shows what comes out of your pay each month in 2026/27, using the thresholds published in the GOV.UK student loan repayment guidance, and projects how much you might repay before the loan is written off.
Quick answer: A student loan Plan 5 calculator applies 9% × (gross pay minus £25,000), the 2026/27 repayment threshold. On a £35,000 salary you earn £10,000 above the threshold, so you repay £900 a year, or £75 a month, and any balance left 40 years after the April you were first due to repay is written off.

What Is a Plan 5 Student Loan?
Plan 5 is the repayment plan for students from England who began an undergraduate course, a PGCE or certain other courses from August 2023. You only repay once your income goes above the repayment threshold, which is £25,000 a year (£2,083.33 a month) for 2026/27. Repayments start the April after you leave your course and are taken through payroll alongside tax and National Insurance.
The formula is 9% × (gross pay minus £25,000). On a £35,000 salary you earn £10,000 above the threshold, so you repay £900 a year, or £75 a month. What you owe does not change the monthly amount. Any balance left 40 years after the April you were first due to repay is written off.
How Do You Use the Student Loan Plan 5 Calculator?
Step 1: Enter Your Salary
You type your gross yearly pay before tax, or use the hourly to annual salary calculator if you only know an hourly rate. Type your gross yearly pay before tax. If you only know an hourly rate, the hourly to annual salary calculator gives you the yearly figure to use here, which keeps the result accurate.

Step 2: Add a Postgraduate Loan if You Have One
Tick the box if you also took out a Master's or Doctoral loan. That loan is repaid at 6% of income above £21,000 at the same time as your Plan 5 repayments, so both appear in the breakdown table.

Step 3: Enter Your Balance and Assumptions
Add your current balance from your online student loan account, the interest rate shown there and an expected yearly pay rise. These only affect the projection, not your monthly repayment.

Step 4: Read Your Results
You will see the monthly, yearly and weekly repayment, the projected total repaid and whether the loan is likely to be cleared or written off. Working part time? The pro rata salary calculator turns a full time salary into your real pay so you can test different patterns.

| £35,000 | £75.00 | £900.00 |
| £45,000 | £150.00 | £1,800.00 |
| £60,000 | £262.50 | £3,150.00 |
