Every stop loss and profit target in forex is measured in pips, but your account is measured in pounds, dollars or euros. This forex pip value calculator bridges the two by turning one pip on any major pair into money in your own currency. It handles standard, mini and micro lots, treats yen pairs and their two decimal pips correctly, and lets you enter the rates your broker is quoting rather than relying on stale data.

Quick answer: A forex pip value calculator uses pip value = pip size × units, worked out first in the quote currency. A pip is 0.0001 on most pairs and 0.01 on yen pairs, so one standard lot of EUR/USD moves $10 per pip. That figure is then converted into your account currency at the live exchange rate.

How the Forex Pip Value Calculator works: pair, lot size and exchange rate in, pip value in your currency out.

What Is a Pip Value?

A pip is the standard unit of price movement for a currency pair. For most pairs it is the fourth decimal place, 0.0001. For pairs quoted in Japanese yen it is the second decimal place, 0.01, because the yen trades at a much lower unit value. The pip value is what that small movement is worth on the size of position you hold.

The sum always starts in the quote currency, the second currency in the pair: pip value = pip size × units. One standard lot of EUR/USD therefore moves $10 per pip. If your account is in pounds, that dollar figure is then multiplied by the USD to GBP rate. If your account currency is the base currency, you divide by the pair's own price instead.

How to Use the Forex Pip Value Calculator

Step 1: Choose Your Account and Pair

Select the currency your trading account is held in, then the pair you plan to trade. The tool fills in example rates so you can see a result straight away.

Step 1: choose the account currency and currency pair

Step 2: Set the Lot Size

Pick standard, mini or micro and enter how many lots you will trade. Fractions work too, so 0.35 standard lots is 35,000 units. Add the number of pips you want to value, such as the distance to your stop.

Step 2: pick the lot type, number of lots and pips to value

Step 3: Enter the Live Rates

Replace the example exchange rate with your broker's current price. When neither currency in the pair matches your account, a second box asks for the quote currency's value in your account currency, for example 1 JPY in GBP on a USD/JPY trade.

Step 3: enter the exchange rate and conversion rate

Step 4: Read Your Pip Value

The headline figure is the value of one pip for your whole position. Below it you will see the quote currency value, the value per single lot and the money at stake over your chosen number of pips.

Step 4: read the pip value for your position

Sizing a Trade With Pip Values

Sarah has a £5,000 account and is happy to risk 1%, which is £50, on a EUR/USD trade with a 25 pip stop. With the rates above, one standard lot is worth about £7.46 a pip, so a 25 pip stop costs about £186.60 per lot. Dividing £50 by £186.60 gives 0.27 lots, and the ratio calculator helps her check that a 50 pip target gives the 2:1 reward to risk she wants before she places the order.

PairPip sizeStandard lot pip value (quote currency)
EUR/USD0.0001$10
EUR/GBP0.0001£10
USD/JPY0.01¥1,000
USD/CHF0.0001CHF 10

Leveraged trading can lose money quickly, so size each position from the pip value rather than from the margin you have free. The FCA guidance on CFDs explains the margin rules UK brokers must follow, and the percentage increase calculator turns two prices into a clear percentage change when you want to see how far a pair has moved over a week.

Forex Pip Value Terms You Should Know

These terms explain the trading units behind the forex pip value calculator, helping you translate price moves into money and size each position sensibly.

Pip
Short for percentage in point, the conventional smallest quoted step in an exchange rate for a currency pair. Traders measure spreads, stop distances and profit targets in pips so moves can be compared across different pairs.
Base currency and quote currency
The first and second currencies in a pair. A quote such as EUR/USD shows how many units of the quote currency buy one unit of the base, and pip values are first worked out in the quote currency.
Lot size
The standard trade size in currency markets, expressed in units of the base currency. Standard, mini and micro lots let traders scale exposure, and pip value rises in direct proportion to the number of units held.
Stop loss
An order that closes a position automatically once price moves a set distance against it. Multiplying the stop distance in pips by the pip value shows the money at risk before a trade is opened.
Position sizing
Choosing how large a trade to place so that the loss if the stop is hit equals a chosen share of the account. It divides the cash risk by the cost of the stop per lot to find the lot quantity.
Risk to reward ratio
The comparison between the amount a trader stands to lose at the stop and the amount they aim to gain at the target, both measured in pips or money. A higher reward relative to risk allows profitability with fewer winning trades.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is one pip worth on a standard lot?

On any pair quoted in US dollars, one pip on a standard lot is worth $10. In pounds that is $10 multiplied by the USD to GBP rate, roughly £7.46 at 1.34.

Why is a JPY pip 0.01 and not 0.0001?

One yen is worth a fraction of a penny, so yen pairs are quoted to two or three decimal places. The second decimal place is treated as the pip to keep pip values similar in size to other pairs.

What is the difference between a pip and a pipette?

A pipette is a tenth of a pip, the fifth decimal place on most pairs or the third on yen pairs. Brokers show it for finer pricing, but stops and targets are usually set in whole pips.

Does pip value change while my trade is open?

Yes, when your account currency is not the quote currency. The pip is fixed in the quote currency, so its value in your currency moves with the conversion rate.

How many units are in a mini or micro lot?

A mini lot is 10,000 units of the base currency and a micro lot is 1,000. Some brokers also offer nano lots of 100 units.

Why should I not rely on a calculator with live rates?

Prices from free feeds can lag your broker's quotes. Entering the rate shown on your own platform gives a pip value that matches what you will actually gain or lose.
